First day at new job

Monday, October 25th, 2004

Today was my first day at my new job, and it looks very promising. The company has some great ideas and there are many interesting projects coming up. The environment is refreshingly different from my last two companies, partially due to the entirely different space (mobile entertainment and applications), as well as the fact that [...]

Subversion: Initial Impression

Saturday, October 23rd, 2004

In the last few days, I have played a little with Subversion. I admit that I’m somewhat of a sucker for configuration management / version control systems. Up to now, I’ve had the opportunity to work with CVS, VSS, StarTeam, and Perforce (I’m not even counting RCS). Out of these tools, the only one I [...]

Introducing The Road to Hibernate

Saturday, October 23rd, 2004

Here is a nice tutorial for Hibernate, a Java-based ORM (object-relational mapping) tool. In the last couple of years, I’ve been fairly removed from the database layer, as the applications I have worked on all had some kind of proprietary database abstraction layer, and most of my work was on the application layer above. It’s [...]

Jarhoo

Saturday, October 23rd, 2004

Why hasn’t anybody thought of this before? If you’re a Java developer, I’m sure you’ve often run into class not found exceptions and had a hard time chasing down the missing JAR file. Jarhoo provides a simple search page that can identify the JAR file or package that corresponds to a particular class. Its growing [...]

Got a new job!

Wednesday, October 20th, 2004

After a good 5 weeks of interviewing, I finally accepted a job offer. Towards the end, there were three jobs I was very interested in, and for some reason all three job offers came in yesterday. It’s funny how these things work out sometimes…

I don’t usually write anything specific about my company on my blog, [...]

JustBlogIt Firefox Extension

Friday, October 15th, 2004

JustBlogIt is a nice little Firefox extension (also works with Mozilla) that adds a right-click menu entry to easily add a blog entry for the current page. The unique thing about it is that it also supports many web based news aggregators, such as Bloglines. You simply have to right-click on the entry you wish [...]

Google Desktop

Thursday, October 14th, 2004

Another very interesting new (beta) Google service: Google Desktop.

This allows users to search through files as well as emails on their desktops, and sounds pretty promising.

Laszlo

Thursday, October 14th, 2004

There appears to be some buzz about a technology called Laszlo right now. Laszlo is an XML-based scripting language that is compiled to Flash, and therefore provides a nice and easy way of writing Flash applications. Laszlo has just been made available as open source. Definitely worth a look.

Google Print

Thursday, October 14th, 2004

Google added a new service called Google Print. Very similar to Amazon’s search within books feature, Google now includes search results from select books (try this sample query). It allows access to matching pages of the book, as well as the two pages before and after. Of course, it also includes links to online bookstores [...]

Job Hunt and Fable…

Friday, October 8th, 2004

Please excuse the recent lack of updates on my blog. This has several reasons:

I am currently seeking a new job, which takes a fair amount of time. (On that note, if you know of a challenging opportunity as a Lead Software Engineer or Software Engineering Manager, please leave a comment). As I mentioned in my previous [...]
