Trekkies of the Round Table

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

I came across a hilariously funny video on YouTube (via Laughing Squid): Star Trek Meets Monty Python. It’s a very well done mashup of clips from the original Star Trek series with the “Knights of the Round Table” song from Monty Python’s Holy Grail. Simply awesome!

Useless Account

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

If you’ve been as overwhelmed as myself with the amount of new, often indistinguishable social web applications that are going live every week, you might get a kick out of this hoax site:

Useless Account

Its only purpose is to allow you to create and edit an account (as you might in a social web app), nothing [...]

Wii Safety Manual

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

Apparently the Japanese version of the Nintendo Wii ships with an insane Safety Guide. Who would have thought that it is not a good idea to stick four leaf clovers into the Wii?

Of course, the community was quick to respond with a spoof: Wii Safety: The Missing Pages

Which fantasy character are you?

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

I came across this interesting little survey application that matches you up with the Fantasy / SciFi character you have most in common with. It looks like most of the characters are drawn from Star Trek, Star Wars, and the Lord of the Rings. According to this application, I’m most similar to Jean-Luc Picard:

An accomplished [...]

Need a tax break? Go do some whale hunting…

Saturday, February 25th, 2006

While working on my taxes, I just came across this little gem in the IRS instructions for itemized deductions:

Certain whaling captains may be able to claim a charitable deduction for whale hunting expenses. See Gifts to Charity on page A-6 for more details.

WTF???

Human-Animal Hybrids

Friday, February 3rd, 2006

I so gotta get me one of these Human-Animal Hybrids T-Shirts!

Thanks to BoingBoing for the link, and thanks to George Bush for making this possible.

Waterfall 2006

Thursday, January 26th, 2006

Both a coworker and Andy Hunt’s blog pointed me to this website. It’s about time the venerable “Waterfall” software development methodology got its own conference: Waterfall 2006.

Enough with the Web 2.0 hype already…

Sunday, January 15th, 2006

If you’re getting tired of the hype around “Web 2.0″, you may get a kick out of this: Wankr

The Official God FAQ

Monday, January 2nd, 2006

I promise after this post I’ll shut up with the Atheist posts for a while. But first:

The Official God FAQ

This is absolutely hilarious! Pay attention to the disclaimer.

And while we’re on the subject, here’s a partly serious, partly humorous proof that there is no god. A lot of good links on that site, [...]

Merry Crispness

Sunday, December 25th, 2005

Merry Crispness - or Christmas, Hannukah, Winter Solstice, or whatever you may or may not be celebrating.

On December 25th we celebrate Newton’s Birthday because Newton actually was born on December 25th. We call the holiday Crispness because it’s about keeping your mind crisp. And it’s not a coincidence that it’s the same day as Christmas [...]

How to scare a file sharer

Wednesday, December 7th, 2005

Here’s an absolutely hilarious story on how someone stopped a file sharer in a hotel from hogging all the bandwidth. If this really happened, it is one of the best pranks ever.

Serious competition for Flying Spaghetti Monster

Monday, November 7th, 2005

As much as I love the Flying Spaghetti Monster movement, this one poses some serious competition: Church of Reality.

The website contains an abundance of very well thought out pages. A lot of it is sarcasm, but there seems to be some deeper and honest motivation as well. They have actually managed to be recognized as [...]

FSM Update

Saturday, October 29th, 2005

I hadn’t kept up with the Flying Spaghetti Monster movement for a while. It really seems to be gaining a lot of traction. In addition to many downloadable wallpapers, they now have a whole bunch of printable brochures, flyers, posters, etc., many of which are quite well done.

But the funniest happenings have to be some [...]

Déjà Fubar

Thursday, October 27th, 2005

Andy Hunt of the Pragmatic Programmers has coined a new term:

déjà fubar | ˌdā zh ä ˈfoōˌbär | noun

That sinking feeling that you’ve made this very same mistake before. Maybe even many times before.

I love it (and know it well…).

What If God Wanted Pasta Sauce

Thursday, August 25th, 2005

Sparkletone did a wonderfully quirky pastafarian parody of “What If God Was One Of Us”, called “What If God Wanted Pasta Sauce”. He provides both a regular version and a vocals only version for those who want to create their own mix.

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

OK, I’m probably the last person to hear about this, but this is insanely funny. In response to the Kansas State Board of Education’s ridiculous and backwards decision to teach Intelligent Design (essentially Christian Creationism dressed up as science), somebody has created a parody religion called “Flying Spaghetti Monsterism”, which has gained a huge following [...]

Clientcopia : Stupid Client Quotes

Friday, August 19th, 2005

Someone on the Pragmatic Programmer mailing list recommended this website: Clientcopia

It’s a massive (3300+) collection of stupid client comments from all fields, many of which I’m sure you can relate to. Just hit “Random” a couple of times; it’s quite entertaining.

LipoBattery

Wednesday, August 11th, 2004

Dave Thomas has an interesting proposal on turning excess body fat into laptop energy. He calls this the LipoBattery. It would solve both the problem of overweight programmers, as well as the lack of battery power in laptops.

As soon as they actually invent this thing, please sign me up for the beta test!
